We added ‘UAEM’ as an affiliation on all member profiles for Técnicas de Investigación Cualitativas http://onsnetwork.org/groups/tecnicas-de-investigacion-cualitativas/ so members can better find each other, e.g. by clicking that on that affiliation in any profile or searching the member directory: http://onsnetwork.org/members/?s=UAEM

Sorry if this is an old issue in the post editor, but where is the little chain “link” button in the tool bar for inserting a hypertext link. (Sort of silly, but I did it via the text, as opposed to visual, editor.)
-
Thank you for mentioning it, @scottveirs you have found a bug — the button should be there in your editor. We will get your button back, and thank you for HTMLing it in the mean time!
-
Thank you again, @scottveirs we are doubling back to let you know that a fix will be implemented during our upcoming sprint. The underlying issue was surprisingly complex! but worth addressing.
-
Thank you, @scottveirs this issue should now be resolved.

Search improvements?
Hi! The search is now functional, which is great; thanks! However, I have a couple of additional requests. I know, they never end.
– Search results in side bar. The space for the search results is far too constrained and makes it extremely difficult to identify the post(s) that the user’s actually searching for. It’d be…[Read more]

What is the recommend way to backup notebooks this site? Something automated and easily rendered offline would be ideal.
thanks

Hello Prof, we are now going to test and recommend a best practice for individual, offline friendly notebook backups this weekend, 21-22 March. Surprisingly perhaps, no one has previously requested this feature. Everything here is backed up on a rolling basis, and the maximum time a full backup has ever taken is close to two hours. Of course that…[Read more]

Hello again, a few updates: Your best option now is to go to Tools, Export on the back end and select “All content,” which will get you a file you can then import into an offline version of WordPress. Providing you with a better option was the focus of this weekend’s sprint, and at this time, a network admin can now generate a notebook-specific…[Read more]

Any chance that you could add a plug-in to allow for HTML exports? This would be far easier for offline rendering because the user would only need a web browser to view the notebook file, instead of an offline installation of WordPress (it’s unlikely that people have a WordPress install on their computers).
-
-
Just updating, we’ve begun to use wget to download HTML versions of our notebooks. This accomplishes two things:
1. Can be automated on our end.
2. Provides HTML that allows us to view the site offline, w/o a need for a local WordPress install to handle the XML exports offered by the WordPress notebooks.

We’ve installed many upgrades today and will continue improving things during this weekend’s sprint. Ping @onscience on Twitter if you want to join in. The upgrades today have in some cases been slow-cooking for a month or two, we’re glad to finally get some of them out there. Changes include:
Antispam
better detection of fake IPs
added…[Read more] -

We are working to significantly improve our search engine, to use technology from Google. The new search will find content both from within this network and from federated open notebooks — those that are hosted elsewhere and archived here. Our new search will also better find results within all public parts of this network, such as discussion…[Read more]

We have switched to the new search engine. The results are much higher quality, but the user interface still needs work.
Our options at this point were 1) do not use the new search engine 2) use it in a way that it will not work on many mobile phone and tablets, but will look great on laptops and desktops 3) use it in a way that works for all…[Read more]

We are automatically populating profiles with exact and unique matches from sites like Twitter and LinkedIn. Avatars, display names, affiliations. Possibly matching data and files sit in a queue. You can still edit your own details! this is a one-time batch for empty profiles.

“blog posts” will now be referred to as “notebook entries” in the activity stream, generally speaking. We are looking for more places to make this type of change, let us know if you see one.

Just a note that we’re aware our Twitter bot is a little off for EIMD entries, and we’re working on that (and some other things) today and tomorrow if necessary as part of #mozsprint.

Thanks to @egon and some open source code, Egon’s notebook here in ONS Network has been synchronized with one of his GitHub repositories. That is, http://onsnetwork.org/chemblaics/ <> https://github.com/egonw/ons — woohoo! This means a GitHub backup. It means writing in the open, exposing publicly the version history. It means a potential for…[Read more]

You can see how some of the implementation unfolded at #onsgithub on Twitter https://twitter.com/hashtag/onsgithub?f=realtime&src=hash
-
Some of the successful resolutions include https://github.com/benbalter/wordpress-github-sync/issues/25 and https://github.com/benbalter/wordpress-github-sync/issues/26 with fixes in https://github.com/benbalter/wordpress-github-sync/pull/27
-
The syncing works, but there is an issue with automatic syncing on save of an entry. Instead of it just happening, you click one link to sync on demand, and that works a treat. We hope to have automatic sync working soon.
-
It would really help to find one more researcher who will keep a notebook here and who uses GitHub, to give this more day in the life testing. There are several new researchers starting notebooks here in the coming days, but no one who will also give syncing with a repo and gh-based interaction a real test. We’re sure to find more room for…[Read more]

None of the students in EIMD appeared to get their passwords and the form to reset the password produces error. Is there anyway to resend the passwords? I did ask them to check their SPAM folders.
-
I issued new passwords, then sent you details in a private message here and a direct message on Twitter. I’d encourage them to set their own passwords once they are logged in, and wrote instructions for that into the message here. Let us know if that gets everything sorted.
I thought this to get them logged in without further delay. If the issue…[Read more]

@sysadmin @brianglanz I’d like to be able to private message people in the network, and preferably anyone i.e. without needing to form a connection/friendship/collaboration first. (Some of these networks require that, like Twitter.) Can someone make it so? -rolf
-
I can do that. It opens up a minor spam vector, but I will also limit the number of PMs per x minutes and our spam registration filters are doing well besides.
-
Private messages are now enabled, and not just limited to one-on-one discussions. Private messages can be sent between any number of members. We can also use this at a system level (rarely, if ever I would think) to message everyone.

From now on, everyone who joins this network will automatically be entered into this tech support group. @ons if we want to add previously registered researchers to this group, there’s a tool for that back in the network admin area.

Hey @ons I added “infinite scroll” to your activity streams. The “there’s more down here, folks” button is still shown, so when you get to the bottom you see it and know there’s more down there. But before you can click it, more loads! cheers

I always liked that each comment in a discussion gets its own URL, but I did not like the way threading was styled. I updated that just now and gave everything more space. An example: http://onsnetwork.org/members/test201407181/activity/9/

testing support ping, member without notebook
-
The ping was received in email as expected, so email subscriptions to regular updates in a group are test passed. However, the message had been flagged as spam. Granted my spam filters are relatively aggressive.
-
Hey guys, if system messages go to spam regularly, I’d try in this order: changing the Send From to support at this domain, review headers, remove extra code and content and customise the wording, and finally look into our own SMTP server.
-
Oh, and group update email subscription passed here, too. It might even be too fast, watch memory if it gets many concurrents.
